Thousand Sons Blue

    Thousand Sons Blue
    Color and paint schemes

Painting a Thousand Sons army always has something special about it. It’s a faction that calls for color, iconography, and a lot of consistency. The list blends the most mutated and demonic aspects of Tzeentch very well.
At Art-W Studio, we handled the assembly, the bases, and the complete painting of the army. Everything was done at a premium level, including premium bases featuring temple ruins and light sand, enhanced with 3D bits to add depth to the scene.
For the color scheme, we based it on the official reference, but adjusted certain tones so the whole set would gain clarity and visual impact on the table. The saturated blues of the armor and discs coexist with aged golds, purple cloths, and small flecks of light in reds, greens, and turquoise.

    Customer briefing

A sea of blue and gold, Thousand Sons from the workshop

The client asked us to assemble and paint a Thousand Sons army featuring a significant number of Tzeentch’s demonic creatures. It was a commission where variety in the models was important, but where the overall visual consistency also had to be carefully maintained.
As a reference, we worked from the faction’s official artwork, introducing small differences to adapt the scheme to a real army and ensure it looked clean on the table.
The requested standard was Premium for the entire project, including the bases, which were to represent temple ruins in a desert setting of light-colored sand.

Between the Demonic and the Arcane

The challenge of this project wasn’t a single miniature, but rather the repetition and the scale. Painting dozens of Tzaangors, several large elite units, and a large batch of Sekhetar requires a systematic approach.
That’s why we started by finalizing samples for each main archetype. Once approved, we developed a standard formula that the entire team could replicate almost identically. This change from other projects allowed us to control the final result much better.
We also paid close attention to the bases, because their light tone and ruined appearance had to balance the intensity of the blue without dulling it.
