Death Guard
Color and paint schemes
The Death Guard is always both a challenge and a pleasure. This project was a major undertaking. From the very first sketches, we knew it wouldn’t be an easy job, but it would be very rewarding. The collection consisted of a wide range of figures: Mortarion as the central figure, accompanied by a Great Unclean One, several Lords, Typhus, and a large group of Plague Marines and Terminators. To flesh out the army, we added 40 Poxwalkers with a unique finish, as well as the ever-imposing Plagueburst Crawlers, Blight-haulers, and plague drones.

Customer briefing
The pestilent march of the Death Guard
He specifically requested a scheme inspired by the classic greens of the Death Guard, but darker, with a grimdark treatment that conveyed decay and rot. He also emphasized the importance of OSL, both on heroes and miniatures’ bases. In terms of priorities, large squads could be Game level, always with a consistent scheme; elites and supports required a Ornate level finish; and heroes, along with Mortarion and the Great Filth, had to reach Premium level. This commission was conceived as a comprehensive project: assembly, magnetization, painting the Warhammers, bases, and some 3D details, seeking to ensure that the entire army exuded the same pestilential and narrative atmosphere.

Toxic puddles illuminate the plague
While the Marines were given layers of rust and controlled dirt, the Poxwalkers were worked on with fluorescent greens and radioactive effects to clearly differentiate them. The heroes were left for last, with special attention given to Mortarion and the Great Unclean One. There we applied the Premium level, with richer gradients, advanced textures, and multiple OSLs. Mortarion, in particular, posed a technical challenge: his wings and armor were painted with desaturated tones, contrasted with greenish halos that integrated him with the rest of the army. During the process, we sent daily photos to the client, validating each phase before moving forward.
