Death Guard Squad
Color and paint schemes
The client wanted a complete Death Guard army inspired by Games Workshop’s classic color scheme, but reinterpreted with the grimdark aesthetic we typically use in our studio.
For this project, we handled assembly, magnetizing bases, conversions, base building, and painting at the Ornate level for the entire army. The bases were also crafted at the Ornate level, featuring a devastated and damp setting, filled with broken rock, dark mud, and contaminated debris.
In terms of painting, we opted for a highly textured and grimy finish, with armor aged through chipping, run-off grime, and accumulated rust. We also replaced the usual maroon fabrics with aged black tones.

Customer briefing
The Darkest Side of the Death Guard
He was looking for a very distinct grimdark aesthetic, with weathered armor, accumulated grime, and an almost damp, greasy look on all surfaces.
One of the most interesting points in the briefing was the Sorcerer in Terminator Armor. Initially, the idea was to use a 3D-printed miniature, but after discussing it with the client, we proposed working on a conversion of a Lord of Contagion.
He also asked us to maintain total cohesion among the units, though allowing for some creative leeway with the Nurglings. There, we were able to play with different shades of green and small color details to make each base slightly different without breaking the army’s overall aesthetic unity.

Corroded Armored Units and Plague Marines
Although we started with Games Workshop’s classic Death Guard scheme, we decided to try out several adjustments to darken the overall look even further. The most significant change was replacing the maroon fabrics with weathered black.
The armor was painted using the same formula of grime, rust, and wear, but with slight adjustments based on the type of miniature. The vehicles and War Dogs were particularly fun because they allowed us to work on large surfaces covered in corrosion, filters, and accumulated stains.
The characters were left for the final phase of the project. That’s where we played around the most with lighting effects, toxic fluids, and color contrasts.
