Custodes Army
Color and paint schemes
At Art-W Studio, we are once again dressing the Imperium in gold. On this occasion, we have worked on an expansion of the Adeptus Custodes army, a project that revisits the classic scheme we had already developed for this same client. It was important to maintain cohesion with the rest of the force.
The set is composed of an impressive variety of units. Each miniature was treated according to its hierarchy: Ornate levels for heroes, vehicles, and characters; Game for line troops and support. The bases, elaborately crafted and magnetized, were also worked on at the Ornate level, balancing coherence and stage presence.

Customer briefing
Guardians of the Golden Throne: Custodes at the Ornate level
The client, a veteran of the company, once again placed his trust in us to expand his golden army. He was already familiar with the studio’s workflow and constant communication, so the instructions were clear: total continuity with the original Custodes design.
He asked us to maintain the balance between the imperial gold and red accents, without changing the overall tone of the metal or the saturation of the fabrics. He also requested that the bases be fully magnetized to facilitate transport and prevent damage during games.
The main objective was to unify all the new units—from the heroic Trajann and Blade Champion to the squads.

The alchemy of gold: layered painting on the Custodes
The work began with a complete airbrush phase, applying the golden base evenly over all the miniatures. From there, each painter took on different groups of units, working on the lights and shadows with a brush.
The magnetized bases were completed separately, with pigments and shades that evoke clean war terrain, without saturating the whole. Cleanliness and control of the metal were an absolute priority.
During the process, we shared daily progress photos with the client, maintaining the same channel of communication as in their previous order.
