Brazen Claws
Color and paint schemes
Every army we paint has a story, but this one stood out from the briefing. The assignment: an army of Brazen Claws with a grid color scheme, like the Novamarines, but in blood red and ultramarine blue. A challenge both for its execution and the accompanying setting.
The collection includes a variety of Primaris units, including Sternguard, Intercessors (assault and heavy), Bladeguard, Terminators, a Stormspeeder and a Captain, all with a thoughtful treatment to detail. We opted for a balance between the visual result and the work time: figures painted mostly at a ornate level, with a Stormspeeder at game level and a Captain at premium level, to which we gave all the care it deserved.
The bases follow the same logic: mostly game level, with occasional improvements to highlight the Terminators, Sternguard and the Captain, whose bases have 3D printed sharp crystals that help to recreate the cavernous atmosphere that the client was looking for.
One of the most striking elements are the firing effects on the minis in action, also 3D printed. And as a finishing touch, a very soft green OSL on scopes and plasma weapons, which contrasts elegantly with the red and blue of the overall scheme.
Grid painting requires a surgical approach: blue coat, cover, red coat, cover, correct. It’s not fast. But the result, clean, vibrant and perfectly symmetrical, makes every hour spent worthwhile.

Customer briefing
The Pulse of Color: Red and Blue in War Symphony
He contacted us as many of our clients usually do: after seeing one of our projects on social networks. He was struck by our color treatment and the clean finish of our minis. He wanted something you don’t see every day: a Brazen Claws army with a red and blue grid color scheme, similar to the Novamarines, but with its own personality.
The brief was clear, but very nuanced. No weathering or weathering. The finish had to be clean, vibrant and technical. He asked us for a varied selection of Primaris troops, and also added a couple of very specific requests: 3D printed firing effects for some attack poses, and sharp crystals on the bases, to simulate a subway setting.
He also wanted the level of paint and bases to be adjusted according to the importance of each miniature. So we planned the project to combine game, ornate and premium paint levels depending on the case, while ensuring a strong visual cohesion throughout the set.
A tailor-made challenge, one of those that make us grit our teeth… and enjoy every phase of the process.

Color Warriors: The Elegance of Brazen Claws
This has been one of those projects in which coordination was as important as the brush. Since it was an army with such a technical scheme and such a specific setting, we decided to structure the process in distinct phases and document each one with daily images that we sent to the client. It was a way to keep the client involved, ensure that everything matched his vision and, incidentally, share the progress with pride.
Grid painting set the pace for everything. We airbrushed the blue half first, then carefully covered each section to apply the red. It was a slow system, but necessary. Then came the most delicate part: correcting all the edges with a brush, making sure that the finish was clean and symmetrical, as the client had asked us to do.
Meanwhile, the bases evolved in parallel. The key figures were coming to life on cavernous bases, decorated with printed Epic Basing crystals. And when the shooting effects started to appear, the photos took on a dynamism of their own.
The project had soul from the beginning. And although it gave us work to do, sharing every little accomplishment with the client made it even more special.
